The inspector general of police, Gen. Kale Kayihura is tomorrow Thursday expected to appear before the parliamentary committee on defence and Internal affairs to answer to queries on police brutality.

Gen. Kayihura was summoned last month by the committee chairperson, the Mityana district Woman MP Judith Nabakoba.

Nabakoba is a former police spokesperson and served under the command of IGP Kayihura. Now, this has sent tongues waging with some committee members claiming she might not be independent enough seeing her boss in a compromising solution.

However, Nabakoba says she is up for the job, and will do her job as required by law. “I believe that people out there, who are skeptical about my ability to face the IGP, are honest enough to understand that this time round I have a duty to perform as a committee chair; we are also expected to report back to parliament.”

The IGP’s trouble started when some police officers and a crime preventer appeared on local different TV channels caning Ugandans who were welcoming Dr. Kiiza Besigye from Luzira.

Citizens in the celebratory moods were caned by officers who for some minutes thought they were grazing Hon. Margaret Muhanga’s 10 billion goats and cows.

The police boss has since faced criticism from all corners of Uganda including the president for leading such a force. MPs on the committee say they are ready to grill him and if necessary ask him to resign his job as has already been advocated for by a section of youths and opposition parties.
